PostgreSQL extensibility limits

Date: 2024-05-30
Time: 09:00–09:50
Room: Canfor(1600)
Level: Intermediate

PostgreSQL is known to be an extensible and pluggable database. It has large ecosystem of extensions, many of which are incredibly complex and powerful.

Unfortunately, not everything can be done from an extension and this leads to creation of forks. I believe that anyone who ever maintained a PostgreSQL fork would rather not do that)

Let's see, what subsystems of PostgreSQL are not extensible enough and how we can improve this in the upcoming versions.

I'll share some obstacles we faced while working on Neon PostgreSQL and give an overview of work-in-progress improvements in this area.
