Online Upgrade of replication clusters without downtime

Currently, the streaming replication cluster requires a lot of down time to be upgraded. Finding ways to upgrade replication clusters without downtime in PostgreSQL has always been a discussion point.

This talk will discuss the problems that do not allow upgrading the replication clusters without downtime. Then, we will talk about the steps to upgrade streaming replication clusters by using logical replication without downtime.

There is also work in progress to introduce a new utility pg_subscriber which will help in reducing a few of manual steps required in upgrading the streaming replication cluster, we will talk about this. Next, we will share the downtime saved with various streaming replication clusters.

Finally, we will talk about the steps to upgrade logical replication clusters using the latest work done in PostgreSQL 17.
