"Developer U": Lessons Learned from a Global Training Program for Postgres Developers

Date: 2026-05-21
Time: 12:00–12:25
Room: Labatt
Level: Beginner

The end is approaching of the first iteration of an internal program at EDB designed for colleagues keen to become PostgreSQL developers.

We'll detail the motivations behind our "Developer U", and our experience with the program.

EDB has many people in its ranks not working on developing Postgres code who could with proper training and support become Postgres contributors. This program is designed to provide that training and support.

The talk will discuss the structure of the program, and how well it has gone. We'll go into how we started the program, how we recruited participants, and how the program has gone.

We'll discuss the challenges of training a group of developers that are spread all over the globe, and that have varying levels of experience with C, and with how the Postgres community operates.

We'll share how the curriculum is structured, and share some thoughts on how we can improve the material for the next cohort that is starting in September.

Lastly we'll cover how we ensured participants could commit time to their learning and development, while still showing up for their "regular job".

This session is for everyone interested in mentoring newcomers to the project, and especially for those in organizations who are interested in developing PostgreSQL talent within their own ranks.
